What is Local SEO

You are looking for business traffic, particularly in your local area, but aren’t getting any hits, or maybe business is slow and you just need a boost. There is an old saying, “if you build it, people will come.” This is true, but ONLY if they are interested in and know how to find you. Even when your traffic increases, you still need to convert your visitors into customers, but getting them to come to you can be a bit tricky, so here is a short guide to Local SEO.

What you are seeking is sales from your town/city, the surrounding area and/or your whole state. Traditional methods only go so far and have become less effective because people have started to use multiple methods to search. Which is your current go-to search engine? Primarily, folks choose Google, followed by Bing, putting them in the top 2. Yahoo! used to be more popular, but now they follow closely behind Bing.

While Google is obviously a large focus, as they are the market leader, local SEO is not tied to Google. But, as they are the market leader, it’s probably safe to assume that you are trying to get into Google.

Google My Business

Google My Business, or GMB, is yet another business listing from Google. This is effectively how they decide to list you in their own phone book, known as Google Maps. Google decided they need to know that you are trustworthy and are playing by their rules, soo… they have to vet you. Nearly half of Google searches are local, and over half of the business owners never even claim their listing and start building on it. So if you don’t do this, you need to A.S.A.P.

Also be aware, that Google does separate searches into both “normal” & “organic” results that target your local area. These targeted results have been given the nicknames “3 Pack” “snack pack”. In the end, you want to be in both.

Lastly be aware that Both Bing and Apple have similar services Bing has “Bing Places”, and Apple has “Apple Maps Listings”.

The Common SEO Steps

Next, you have what can be considered a sanity or ACID test for your site. Ensuring your site is well structured and organized, such that it makes sense to both your potential customers AND Google. This basically means the following:

  • Do you have basic site navigation such that everyone can actually get around and go to a central place to get to all your stuff?
  • Do those pages’ URL’s (web addresses) have the best/most friendly URLs for both your visitors and search engines?
  • Do all pages have a title?
  • Do all pages have headers for the sections of content? This is no different than an English paper after all…
  • Do the pages have the metadata for even the most basic of search bots to know what is going on in your page? This has the technical term of “meta tags”. More specifically “meta description” and “meta keywords”
  • Have you figured out what people should search to be able to find you?

Now let’s say you have ALL of that. Are you sure its the best it can be? Basically, is it optimized for what you are looking to attract? Since we are focusing on LOCAL SEO here, is it properly targeted AND optimized to get people in your LOCAL area?

Are you a traditional brick and mortar company? Yes? Ok, so you should probably be giving out information for all your locations… Why? So you can be FOUND based on them! You want anyone near your offices to be able to say “oh, cool they are only 15 minutes away and have what I need!”. People expect you to be near them to buy from you (in most cases).

They may not be looking for your help, but they will remember who you are because you provided them something useful!

Linking with Aggregators and Getting a NAP

You understand the basics now, that you need content, AND you need to be on mobile. Now you need to be friendly with the main map aggregators and ensure your main contact information (NAP; Name, Address, Phone) is always seen on your site. The NAP is generally in the footer The goal here is to ensure that you’re approachable and present everywhere you can be, and most of the map data comes from these aggregators. These include:

  • My Business Listing Manager (Acxiom)
  • Factual
  • and so many more

After that, you need to be sure there are no errors.

Linking with others

Get legitimate links with others. This is one of the most basic ways to rise up and be found online. If you get others to link to you, and you link back to reciprocate legitimately, this will benefit your ranking. LOCAL SEO is based on subjects, events, or other local businesses in your area. If you have some useful knowledge to lend, you could write content for others locally, and get a linkback in the process for a win, win!
